FORUM 9

This week, we looked at Graphic Design, and especially the technological and cultural context within which Graphic Design became a profession. We also talked about some of the cultural appropriation and stereotyping that happened as a result of the developments.

For Discussion Forum 9, begin by doing some further reading about Graphic Design. Then, do some research to identify a single graphic design artifact that may have been effective in its own time, but carries problematic cultural baggage with it today. The easiest way to think about this is probably in terms of the graphic design examples I used in the lecture such as posters or advertisements, but other examples such as jewelry, furniture, home goods, and architecture are valid as well. Fashion might also be an especially relevant visual medium to consider. You can choose something historical or modern, but you do need to describe specifically how you believe the graphic design portrays problematic cultural appropriation and stereotyping.

In your post, you should use the "Insert Stuff" button in D2L to post an image of your graphic design artifact so that it displays easily for the rest of us to view (please avoid attachments). You should also copy and paste a link to where you found your example online. Then, describe in detail the nature of your artifact and why you find it to be problematic.
